Microsoft 365 Copilot Hit by ‘EchoLeak’ Zero-Click Exploit

Is your AI assistant secretly vulnerable? Cybersecurity researchers recently uncovered a critical flaw in Microsoft 365 Copilot, the AI chatbot integrated across Microsoft’s Office suite. Dubbed “EchoLeak,” the vulnerability allowed attackers to potentially compromise the system through a zero-click exploit, meaning no user interaction beyond simply receiving an email was required to trigger the attack.

The implications of such a vulnerability are significant, especially given Copilot’s access to sensitive data within organizational systems. According to a report by AI security firm Aim Security, the exploit could enable malicious actors to extract confidential information directly from the user’s environment. Thankfully, Microsoft has confirmed that the vulnerability has been patched, and that initial investigations suggest no users were actually affected by the exploit.

Aim Security detailed the EchoLeak exploit in a blog post, explaining how they were able to successfully execute the attack. The core issue revolved around Copilot’s “agentic capability”—its ability to access tools and perform actions on behalf of the user, like retrieving data from OneDrive. The researchers demonstrated how a crafted email, leveraging cross-prompt injection attack (XPIA) techniques, could trick Copilot into leaking sensitive data without any explicit user command.

Here’s how the attack worked, according to the researchers:

  • Crafted Input: An attacker sends a specially formatted email to a Copilot user.
  • XPIA Exploitation: The email leverages XPIA techniques to manipulate Copilot’s interpretation of subsequent prompts.
  • Data Exfiltration: Copilot, under the attacker’s influence, retrieves and leaks sensitive information.

“The attack results in allowing the attacker to exfiltrate the most sensitive data from the current LLM context – and the LLM is being used against itself in making sure that the MOST sensitive data from the LLM context is being leaked, does not rely on specific user behavior, and can be executed both in single-turn conversations and multi-turn conversations,” Aim Security wrote.

The researchers demonstrated that this could be achieved not only through text within an email but also by embedding malicious instructions within the alt text of an image or even via a specially crafted Microsoft Teams GET request. The latter being particularly concerning as it demanded no action whatsoever from the user.

The discovery raises crucial questions about the security of AI-powered tools integrated into everyday workflows. One local IT administrator, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed his concerns, saying, “We’re increasingly reliant on these AI assistants, but are the security protocols really keeping pace? This one detail mattered , the fact that a simple email could potentially expose so much data is alarming.”

According to a statement given to a leading business publication, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the vulnerability, stating, “We thank Aim Security for responsibly disclosing this issue to us. We have deployed a fix, and our investigation has found no evidence of exploitation.”

The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the potential risks associated with AI agents, particularly those with broad access to user data and system functionalities. While the issue has been addressed, it highlights the need for continuous vigilance and rigorous security testing as AI continues to permeate enterprise environments. This raises the question: Are current AI security measures sufficient to protect against increasingly sophisticated attacks?

Cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of proactive measures, including:

  1. Regular security audits of AI systems.
  2. Implementation of robust input validation and sanitization techniques.
  3. Employee training on recognizing and reporting potential phishing attempts.
  4. Continual monitoring of AI system activity for anomalous behavior.

The EchoLeak incident underscores the importance of a layered security approach. It is not enough to simply rely on the AI vendor to secure their systems. Organizations must take proactive steps to protect themselves and their data. One IT expert from a major bank spoke on X.com about the need for “defense in depth.”

“We can’t just trust that these systems are inherently secure. We need to have our own safeguards in place, like multi-factor authentication and data loss prevention policies,” they wrote.
