The motion picture “Arcadia” by Yorgos Zois is the Greek cinema official nomination for the 98th Academy Awards, commonly referred to as the Oscars.
As stated by the Greek Ministry of Culture, it is the perfect film to represent modern Greek cinema having participated in prestigious international festivals.
The film is a fantasy drama starring Angeliki Papoulia and Vangelis Mourikis. A fatal car accident shakes up the wintery tranquility of a tourist resort. Giannis, a former doctor, and Katerina, a neurologist, arrive to the local hospital to identify the victim. Katerina is shocked, finding that her fears are proven right.
Together and separately, they will try to connect the pieces of the puzzle of the life that was lost in the crash, coming face to face with a series of unexpected revelations. They are not alone. At the area’s eerie seaside bar, Arcadia, Katerina will encounter a strange group of unexpected companions. Katerina and Giannis now have to unravel a mystery.
In supporting roles, Elena Topalidou, Nikolas Papagiannis, Vangelis Evangelinos,
Asterios Rimagmos, Evangelia Andreadaki, Flomaria Papadaki, Elena Mavridou, and
Antonis Tsiotsiopoulos complete the cast.
Director Yorgos Zois co-wrote the scrip with Konstantina Kotzamani. ‘Arcadia’ premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in Encounters. It also participated in the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival in the Firebird Awards: Young Cinema competition.

George Zois represented Greek cinema at some of the most important festivals worldwide, such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam and Telluride. In Greece, his work has been recognized with the Best Short Film Award for ‘Casus Belli’ from the Hellenic Film Academy, as well as seven awards at the short film Drama Festival, including Best Film, Direction, and Screenplay.
His first feature film, ‘Interruption’, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2015, winning the Best New Director Award from the Hellenic Film Academy, and his short film ‘Third Kind’, which premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2018, won over American audiences with its first screening at the Telluride Film Festival.
The Greek film director has been nominated for Best Director by the European Film Academy for his film ‘End Credits’. In addition, he served as a member of the official jury “Lion of the Future” at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. His films have been broadcast on major television stations, such as CANAL+, ARTE, and have been selected by the renowned Criterion platform.

The announcement of the Ministry of Culture regarding the Greek nomination for the Academy Awards reads as follows:
“Official nomination of Greece for the 98th Academy Awards is the motion picture ‘Arcadia’ by director Yorgos Zois, which was selected to compete for the International Feature Film Academy Award, in the 98th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States.”
‘Arcadia’ was nominated after the unanimous vote of an 11-member Committee, which is formed by the Ministry of Culture exclusively for this purpose.
Deputy Minister of Culture Iason Fotilas accepted the Committee’s opinion and issued the relevant decision.
The Ministry of Culture ensures the timely completion of the procedures for representing Greek cinema at the 98th Academy Awards, in accordance with the regulations of the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
