When Ubisoft’s free-to-play first-person shooter, XDefiant, was first released, it was labeled as a “Call of Duty-killer” but as time passed, it became more and more clear that the game still has a long way to go before it can compete with any Call of Duty game. The game had a rough start as players came across many technical issues but with Mark Rubin’s efforts the game managed to stay afloat.
Now, roughly three months after the game’s release, there is a rumor going around that claims that Ubisoft will shut down the game soon if the low player count doesn’t recover. Amidst this rumor, some fans have united on social media to show support, claiming that they will continue to play the game.
Recently, several media outlets claimed that Ubisoft is planning to shut down XDefiant due to low player count. Ubisoft hasn’t released any such statement but the rumors claim that the game may stop receiving any sort of support from the developers at Ubisoft after Season 3 if the player count doesn’t recover by then. After hearing the rumors, fans showed support on Reddit as many don’t want to see the game shutting down.

XDefiant is a fast-paced game and it’s really difficult to keep up even if you’ve played a lot of first-person shooters. In simple words, the game is not for everyone but still, it managed to provide an exciting fps experience for a game that’s free.
Ubisoft is trying its best to improve XDefiant, but many issues still need to be acknowledged. Players have highlighted that the game’s netcode needs to be fixed as well as many technical issues that constantly ruin the gaming experience. Many believe that Ubisoft should’ve taken more time to work on the game instead of rushing it.
Players have been constantly pointing out the issues in the game, but Ubisoft has failed to acknowledge them. If the rumors turn out to be true, the game will die after Season 3 as Ubisoft wouldn’t spend more money on a game that is losing players.
Unfortunately, the community is also to be partly blamed. Players expect developers to roll out updates frequently, not realizing that sometimes the game is not the problem but also the community. Despite Ubisoft’s efforts, XDefiant was filled with tryhards, cheaters, and toxic players who ruined the experience for everyone.
XDefiant was released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on May 21, 2024.
