Viper’s identity points directly towards their connection with Shadow Dragons. Their rise to power will introduce a storyline that could redefine the politics and magical landscape of the continent of Thedas. Which, in the long run, will be beneficial for BioWare to build upon.

If the Shadow Dragons come to power and if you do not save Minrathous, then the Viper gets blighted in the dragon attack, which opens up a lot of possibilities for BioWare to base future games on.
