A pet dog has been shot by a police officer in Perth’s southern suburbs while trying to execute an arrest warrant.
Officers attended the property on Nydani Court in Thornlie to execute the warrant before the dog was shot about und 4.15pm on Wednesday.
Police said that when an officer entered the backyard of the property, they were “confronted by a dog behaving in an aggressive manner”.
“Upon arrival, officers observed a male person in the backyard,” a police spokeswoman said.
The Kelpie x Bull Mastiff — which 7NEWS Perth reported was named Toby — was shot in the face.
It is not known if police made any attempts to taser the dog.
The spokeswoman did not confirm whether anyone was arrested, instead saying an investigation into the incident “remained ongoing”.
The animal was reportedly taken to a local vet before being rushed into emergency surgery.
A resident at the home said an officer had knocked on her front door before another officer jumped the back fence and shot the animal.
“I had the police officer come to my house for my son,” she told 7NEWS
“I do not understand it … I don’t know why he shot him.”
