This past week, Battlefield 6‘s developers made a number of significant announcements, including a five-minute in-depth video on the official Battlefield YouTube account that revealed new gameplay, a new studio, and a new community project.
The numerous, brief but entertaining gameplay snippets of the upcoming title, which featured chaotic gunplay, devastation of the environment, and exhilarating vehicular combat, were what most fans were interested in. Additionally, a brief tour of Battlefield Studios is included in the opening trailer. Fans are pretty excited about this announcement, but a recent report might deject all the hype.
A recent report about Battlefield 6 provides some insight into the game’s development team, as it appears that many members of the team are completely new to the franchise.
It is understandable that this news has already caused division, with the arrival of these new players either causing a loss of the traditional values behind older releases that Battlefield 6 is supposedly trying to recreate or serving as a good way to move away from the many negatives of recent projects like 2042.
According to recent remarks made by an alleged anonymous former DICE employee, the majority of the developers from previous Battlefield releases have since left the company, meaning that many new developers are leading Battlefield 6.
This has only intensified the debate surrounding the title. Naturally, this pervasive lack of concrete prior involvement in the Battlefield franchise is highly concerning, with the only possible benefit of this shift being a departure from Battlefield‘s recent flaws.
The same claim that EA is trying to bring Battlefield closer to Call of Duty by implementing things like yearly releases and a greater emphasis on in-game seasons and battle passes, along with BF6‘s lack of experienced developers, sparked outrage and, if accurate, demonstrated a significant gap between the franchise’s community and BF‘s future.
Even though some new developers may have helped move past 2042‘s shortcomings, it seems hard to imagine BF6 hitting the same beats as games like Battlefield 3 under this highly contentious approach.
Battlefield Labs, a new testing program for fans to test the upcoming series and provide feedback on their experiences, has been announced by Electronic Arts. By doing this, the community will have more opportunities than ever before to influence the creation of the upcoming Battlefield game.
Although many of their issues were eventually resolved, the last few Battlefield games launched with a plethora of technical problems that damaged their overall reputations. To ensure a smoother launch than its immediate predecessors, EA confirmed in September 2024 that the upcoming Battlefield game will undergo a community testing program.
On February 3, five months later, the publisher formally unveiled its testing program. The initiative, known as Battlefield Labs, will give fans the chance to test out the majority of Battlefield 6—or whatever the next game in the series is called—and give the developers feedback.
“We will test (almost) everything but not everything you see will be complete,” stated EA. At first, the program will only accept a few thousand people in North America and Europe, but it will eventually grow to include tens of thousands of testers and additional territories.
Now it’s up to the “new” developers how they are going to shape up the future of the Battlefield franchise.
