Subnautica 2 was just announced at the October 2024 Xbox Partner Preview event. During the event, developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment revealed that the highly anticipated sequel will enter early access in 2025. There was no release date, though.
With the addition of a four-player co-op mode, there will be a lot of fans wanting to jump into the action with friends. But PlayStation fans might find themselves left in the dark as the game is set to launch on Xbox Game Pass from day one. There was also no mention of a PS5 release, something that Valheim players will relate to.
During the Xbox Partner Preview event, developers Unknown Worlds Entertainment and publisher Krafton revealed Subnautica 2. The sequel continues the underwater exploration theme of the first game, but this time with a twist. Players are no longer limited to exploring alone, they can now dive into the depths with friends.

Co-op gameplay will allow up to four players to explore, build, and survive together, making it an even more thrilling experience for those who enjoy multiplayer games. However, despite the excitement, PS5 players may be feeling left out.
The game’s early access release will be exclusive to Xbox Game Pass and PC platforms, much like the original Subnautica and its spin-off, Below Zero, which initially launched on these platforms. Funnily enough though, This isn’t the first time PlayStation users have missed out on anticipated survival games.
I heard in the Subnautica server that Sony/Playstation doesn’t allow Early Access games. For full release though it’ll definitely be on PlayStation.

Valheim is a notable example, having been in early access since 2021 without a PlayStation release. The game’s added release on Xbox Game Pass makes it even more appealing to Xbox owners. They’ll be able to play the game’s early access at no extra cost, alongside titles like Fable and FBC: Firebreak in 2025.

PlayStation owners will have to wait and see if the game eventually makes its way to Sony’s console. The original Subnautica and Below Zero did eventually get released on PS4 and PS5, so there is hope that history will repeat itself.
Developed by Iron Gate Studio, Valheim has sold over 5 million copies and has a record-breaking number of concurrent players on Steam. Despite its success on PC and Xbox, the game has yet to be announced for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch.

Both Subnautica 2 and Valheim share a similar co-op survival structure. Fans have felt the latter’s absence from PlayStation. But not all hope is lost. The developers of the Norse-themed survival game have hinted at the possibility of a PlayStation release once the game exits early access, which could happen by 2025.
The current PlayStation ecosystem does not accept early-access games as readily as Xbox does, which might explain this delay. Still, once Valheim fully launches, it’s expected that the PlayStation audience will finally have the chance to explore its Viking wilderness in all its glory.
Microsoft’s Game Preview program and Game Pass service make it easier for developers to launch unfinished games while still getting a player base that provides feedback. This strategy has worked well for games like Subnautica and Valheim, but it leaves PlayStation users feeling left out sometimes.
Do you think either of these games will eventually get a PS5 release? Let us know in the comments!
