The star-faring grind never stops for a Starfield ship captain, and that includes you. As you explore the game’s vast universe, you’ll quickly realize you’re carrying way too much stuff. Before you know it, your inventory will be cluttered, making it hard to find what you actually need in a hurry.
This is where the Captain’s Locker comes in handy. It’s a dedicated storage space in your active ship where you can stash all your items to free up space. In this guide, we’ll explain how to find the Captain’s Locker and make the most of it.
The Captain’s Locker (which is a completely different concept from the Cargo Hold) is conveniently located right in the cockpit. When you approach it, you’ll see two options: Take and Transfer.
The first time you use the locker, you’ll need to transfer items into it. Simply follow the prompt on the bottom right of the inventory block.
Once you select “Transfer,” an inventory menu will pop up. From there, look at the commands at the bottom right, select Inventory, and you’ll be able to move things from your inventory into the locker.
After you’ve stored your items, accessing them is just as easy. Walk up to the locker again, and you’ll be able to remove anything you previously stored with just a few quick clicks.
This makes it much easier to manage your supplies without overcrowding your ship’s general storage. That’s it for learning about how to use the locker.
Before you start storing all of your ultra cool items, though, there are some things you need to understand about the locker.
Sometimes, Starfield players might find that the stuff they stored in the Captain’s Locker mysteriously disappears. Don’t panic—it’s still with you, just in a different location.
Tip
Some players have reported a bug where they’ve permanently lost their items stored in the locker without changing ships, so beware.
When you change your primary ship, the items in the locker automatically move to your new ship’s Cargo Hold. Each ship has its cargo hold located in a different place. If you followed our guide to get the best ship in the game, the Star Eagle, you’ll find it near the last chair to the right of the cockpit.
If you’re having trouble locating the cargo hold, you can access it from anywhere near your ship through the TAB menu (PC players) or the Pause menu (console players).
For PC, simply press TAB, Ship, and then Cargo Hold. On Xbox, pause the game, select Ship, and press (X) to open the Cargo Hold menu.
If you can’t find your items in the Cargo Hold, try switching back to your previous ship. Your items should reappear in the locker of your old ship. However, to avoid any headaches, it’s better to empty your locker before changing ships, especially if you’re storing valuable items.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that if you repair your ship, it might use up items stored in the locker. So, if any ship repair supplies go missing, that’s likely the reason.
The Captain’s Locker is a great tool for managing your inventory, and now you know exactly how to find and use it.
