Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 and Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have been close competitors for quite some time now thanks to their similar third-person PvE experiences. However, there is one particular mode in Space Marine 2 that makes it different from Helldivers 2: the PvP mode.
Helldivers 2 has great combat mechanics and a PvP mode certainly be an exciting experience, however, it will ruin the game as Helldivers 2 has always promoted teamwork. Friendly fire is always on in the game but the community heavily criticizes those who abuse the system and intentionally kill their teammates. It’s safe to say that the community hates the idea of adding a PvP mode to the game, however, they do want Arrowhead to add one game mode.
Space Marine 2 fans often shame Helldivers 2 for not having a PvP mode, but that’s not an issue because the game doesn’t need it. The game has always been about a friendly co-op experience, so a PvP mode would increase the toxicity since things will get much more competitive. Helldivers 2 certainly has some great combat mechanics, realistic ragdoll animations, and crazy explosions, so a PvP round-based type of game mode would be crazy but that would completely ruin the idea that the game has been promoting since day one.
Most Helldivers 2 players agree that the game doesn’t need a PvP mode, plus, Arrowhead has no plans of adding such modes to the game. In February 2024, Arrowhead’s CCO, Johan Pilestedt, appeared for a pre-release interview with Comics Gaming Magazine and was asked if the game has a PvP mode. He explained,
As Pilestedt explained, Helldivers 2 would become much more toxic if Arrowhead added a PvP game mode. Franchises like Call of Duty and Valorant are known for their exciting PvP modes, however, the games are filled with toxic players.
An X account called Helldiversmedia shared a meme on behalf of all Helldivers 2 players, asking Arrowhead to allow players to add more teammates to their squads. Currently, the game only allows 4 people to form a squad and enter a mission. Players have been suggesting that Helldivers 2 needs a game mode that allows more than 4 players to play together.
If Arrowhead wants to take things to the next level, it could add a map that allows 30 players to deploy on a single mission as that would make things much more exciting. The Omens of Tyranny update introduced new enemies, weapons, Stratagems, and maps, so it’s about time Arrowhead also introduced a new game mode.
