A games site founder has had his priest license revoked after he imitated a ‘salute’ made by Elon Musk at the inaugural rally for President Donald Trump.
Former games journalist and God is a Geek owner Calvin Robinson – who went on to become a priest, prominent conservative influencer, and spokesperson for the British right-wing political party UKIP – appeared at the national Pro-Life Summit on Wednesday, according to a video posted on social media.
In the video, which has been watched over 10 million times, Robinson (in the words of his church) “closed his comments with a gesture that many have interpreted as a pro-Nazi salute”, seemingly imitating a similar gesture made by Tesla owner Musk last week.
In a statement posted on X, Robinson claimed the gesture was a “joke”. However, the Anglican Catholic Church (not associated with the Roman Catholic church) criticised his actions and announced it had revoked his priest license.
Calvin Robinson is the founder and last known owner of God is a Geek, a notable games publication featured by Metacritic, and which regularly appears in marketing for PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox.
Although staff claim Robinson is no longer involved in the editorial running of the site, and his name is not listed on its staff page, Robinson’s company LDN.CM is acknowledged as the owner of God is a Geek.
According to company records, LDN.CM was dissolved in 2019, so it’s not clear if Robinson still owns the site or not. The registration name for the GodisaGeek.com domain is listed as a private individual.
Asked for clarification, God is a Geek stopped short of stating Robinson is no longer involved in the publication. It told VGC in a statement: “Calvin Robinson has no involvement with the site on a day to day basis whatsoever. The editorial team will make no further comment.”
According to Robinson’s author page, he most recently published articles for the site in 2019, in addition to appearing on a podcast. After founding the game site, Robinson ran as a candidate for both the Conservative Party (in 2016 and 2018) and the Brexit Party (in 2019).
