A former Newton Police Department officer has been stripped of his law enforcement certification after lying during an investigation.
Wyatt Blasi was employed by the police department from June 20, 2022 to Aug. 8, 2023 and Aug. 26, 2024 to Sept. 12, 2024, according to a summary order of revocation from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training.
The Eagle contacted phone numbers associated with Blasi but he did not respond to a request for comment on this story.
The summary order of revocation gave this account:
Blasi and his field training officer responded to an overdose call on Sept. 2, 2024 and were first to arrive. They entered the home, where the training officer asked Blasi to go get Narcan from the patrol car. It is used to treat people who have overdosed on opiods.
Blasi looked in the passenger side door map pocket, glove compartment and the back hatch area but didn’t find the Narcan. He went back inside and told his training officer that. By this time EMS had arrived and revived the person.
Drugs and paraphernalia were found inside the residence. The training officer asked Blasi to take the evidence back to the car.
With his body camera rolling, Blasi opened the driver side of the patrol car and saw the Narcan sitting in the map pocket. He immediately shut the door, locked the car and walked toward the house.
He reached the front yard, then turned around and went back to the patrol car. He opened the door, grabbed the Narcan and shoved it under the front seat.
Blasi told his training officer that he found the Narcan under the front seat. Ten days later the training officer was reviewing Blasi’s body cam footage to update the progress of his field training.
She saw Blasi grabbing and placing the Narcan under the front seat and reported it to department leadership. An internal investigation began, and a police supervisor asked Blasi about the location of the Narcan.
Blasi lied to the supervisor but later admitted that he lied to his training officer and the supervisor.
Newton is a city of 18,251 just north of Wichita.
