Ever since its debut back in September 2024, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 has managed to acquire critical and commercial acclaim. The title has surpassed an impressive 4.5 million player count in October 2024, and that figure has grown since then.
Developer Saber Interactive has confirmed that players can expect to see new free content in the game this December. The update will finally bring us the highly anticipated Dark Angels Chapter, which will be an incredible addition to the game’s already impressive customization and player expression.
However, before getting too excited about the arrival of Dark Angels, it’s crucial to know about their 10,000-year-old betrayal, which might turn you against this Chapter.
In the Warhammer 40k world, the Dark Angels are the very first Space Marine Chapters established by the Emperor and have rituals and traditions that date back to the start of the Imperium of Man. Commanded by their primach Lion El’Johnson, these super soldiers are known for their secrecy, which goes beyond the battlefield.
The Dark Angels are famous for their Ravenwing and Deathwing Companies, which make use of bikes and Terminator armor to steamroll through enemies. While this famed Space Marine Chapter has an incredible legacy, some of its members committed one of the worst crimes: going against the Emperor.
During Horus Heresy, a galaxy-spanning war that ravaged the Imperium of the Man, a chunk of Dark Angels decided to betray the Emperor. This betrayal happened in their home world, Caliban, and under the command of Luther, one of the high-ranking Dark Angels, who was influenced by corruption and jealousy.
When some Dark Angels turned against Lion El-Jonson and the Emperor, a conflict happened that completely wrecked Caliban and led to its destruction. Those who went against the Emperor fled across the galaxy and came to be known as Fallen Angels.
Even Lion El’Johnson went into hiding after the incident and left his Legion with guilt. This betrayal became a dark secret within the Dark Angel. In today’s time, the Chapter seeks to atone for its past activities and hunts down all the members of the Fallen.
In order to pursue their primary objectives, they hold information from their allies and even go against Imperial orders to maintain their secrets.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Saber manages to honors the legacy of this Chapter within Space Marine 2, considering all the tragic events it has gone through.
Patch 5 for Space Marine 2 will go live in the first half of December, and alongside bringing the Dark Angels, the update will also add a brand-new mission in the co-op PvE mode Operations.
Dubbed Operation: Obelisk, the new mission will run parallel to the main campaign’s final events and will see gamers making a return to Demerium to disrupt the energy that’s surrounding the Aurora device. Players will also battle through a dark tomb and face off against a new enemy, Tzaangor Enlightened.
Another major addition for the next update will be the support for FSR 3 and DLSS, new armor pieces, and customization in the form of colored lenses with more than 15 different colors. Space Marine 2 will also finally bring native PS5 Pro support.
As Space Marine 2 continues to grow and evolve, we’ll undoubtedly see the addition of tons of new content in the game as we head into 2025. Considering Saber’s track record so far, the DLCs won’t be a disappointment, unlike Todd Howard’s dream project.
