One person died on Highway 41 in Oconto Sunday morning after losing control of their vehicle and striking the back of a snowplow, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The crash happened at 8 a.m. Sunday on Highway 41 southbound at Frog Pond Road, near Oconto Municipal Airport.
The state patrol’s initial investigation indicates the vehicle, a 2012 Cadillac sedan, lost control and hit the back of a snowplow. The snowplow was in the left turn lane and had stopped before the crash.
The driver of the sedan sustained fatal injuries, though no other information about the driver was available. No other passengers were in the sedan. The snowplow operator was not injured in the crash.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting the crash investigation, according to a release. Agencies that responded to the crash include the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, Oconto Police Department, Oconto Fire and Rescue, Brown County Medical Examiner and Oconto County Emergency Dispatch Center.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends extra caution when driving near snowplows, including staying at least 200 feet behind a working plow and being careful if you decide to pass one.
Snowplows often create clouds of snow that can limit visibility, and conditions in front of the plow are likely worse.
Road conditions from 511.wi.gov show Highway 41 near Oconto is not partially or completely covered with snow as of 1:00 p.m. and has normal conditions.
