Hundreds of Goldfields-Esperance teens will get the chance to experience Constable Care Foundation’s film and theatre high school incursions this month.
Designed to tackle pressing social issues, the interactive workshops will take place at Esperance Senior High School and John Paul College next week.
Unlike the Constable Care programs for young children which regularly tour primary schools Statewide, the foundation’s Youth Choices programs are usually only available to metropolitan secondary schools and community groups.
With support from the Federal Government’s Safe and Together Community Grants Program, the production will head to the region.
The 90-minute incursions will see the screening of a short film, titled No Offence, followed by discussions to explore issues of bullying, racism and microaggressions.
Foundation chief executive Ian Anstee said he was delighted to give regional high school students an experience that was only usually available to city teens.
“Our Youth Choices programs have an excellent track record in encouraging critical thinking in young people in metro Perth, so we aim to extend this impact to remote and regional areas,” he said.
“These programs use film and theatre to effectively engage kids and they really do work.
“An Edith Cowan University evaluation observed an increase in more respectful interactions, stronger decision-making and communication skills, and a much better understanding of the issues explored.”
The tour will visit Esperance Senior High School on October 21 and 22 before heading to John Paul College on October 24 and 25.
