The Des Moines metro’s second Steak ‘n Shake is planned for Waukee.
The fast food chain known for its steakburgers and homemade milkshakes would be built at 1045 S.E. Alice’s Road — about a block northeast of the intersection of Southeast Alice’s Road and Southeast University Avenue.
The original double steakburger with cheese is a bestseller at Steak ‘n Shake.
Waukee’s Planning & Zoning Commission is set to consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday.
Waukee previously approved a plan for a Dollar Tree to be located at the same site but the discount store never moved forward with construction, according to city documents.
DSDH Waukee, LLC, the company behind the planned Steak ‘n Shake, is owned by David Sturm, who has a Fremont, Wisconsin, address, according to Iowa business records.
The interior of Steak ‘n Shake is seen on Jan. 7, 2021, located on South 51st St. in West Des Moines. The spot is the first of its franchise to be established in the Des Moines metro, complete with a countertop ordering system and digital kiosks.
Steak ‘n Shake owns its locations in Coralville and the only other location in the Des Moines metro at 815 S. 51st St. in West Des Moines.
The West Des Moines restaurant opened to much fanfare in 2021 with a line of drive-thru customers spilling onto Mills Civic Parkway.
