Rocksteady Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed Arkham series, has built a legacy as one of the greatest video game franchises in gaming history. Their titles have rarely disappointed their fans. However, so far, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been a massive failure following its release in February 2024.
However even before the game was launched, there was a rumor brewing around the internet claiming how Rocksteady gave up on the one game that players actually wanted. But what was this rumored project? and is there any truth to it? Let’s find out.
In January of 2024, one month before Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was released, there was a rumor circulating about how Rocksteady developers had originally pitched a Superman game to Warner Bros. But the Studio passed on the opportunity and instead scrapped the idea in favor of Suicide Squad. Fans of the series were devastated after hearing that the Superman game was ditched.
In reality, the rumor is completely false. According to Bloomberg’s reporter, Jason Schreier, Rocksteady Studios never pitched or worked on a Superman game to Warner Bros. He mentions that after the launch of Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, they started working on Batman VR and an unannounced multiplayer game.
Hearing from multiple sources that Rocksteady pitched a Superman game to WB as a follow up to Arkham Knight, and WB passed on the project.

The Superman rumor originally started from an X(formerly Twitter) user named James Sigfield, who tweeted about how he heard from multiple sources that there was a Superman game in development. He even presented easter eggs in Batman: Arkham Knight that referenced Superman. James Sigfield later told Schreier about how he had been mistaken, and even though he had corrected his mistake in a later tweet, it never caught on.
Why, then, has such a flimsy rumor been so prevalent that fans continue to bring it up on social media today? Likely because nobody wants to believe the reality: that one of their favorite studios has been working on a multiplayer service game for more than half a decade.
According to Schreier, the rumor stuck around because people were not accepting the fact that one of their favorite studios had been working on a multiplayer game for more than 15 years.
Rumors continued to spread even after a year of it being debunked. Although there won’t be a Superman game in the near future, fans are still hoping that Rocksteady will redeem itself after their previous failure.
Rocksteady Studios had set the gold standard for DC superhero games, but their pivot to the live service Suicide Squad title felt like a stab in the back. A Superman game now is more than just another superhero title or franchise, it is like a ray of hope for gamers who trusted Rocksteady to deliver groundbreaking experiences.
