Call of Duty by Activision is one of the top first-person military shooter game series in the world that introduces both a single-player campaign mode and a multiplayer online mode. Their latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the seventh installment in the iconic Black Ops franchise.

The title was released back in October of 2024 with high expectations yet the game is losing players exponentially. Within the first couple of months after release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has lost around 50% of its player count.
Why is Call of Duty losing players so much? Is Activision losing its grip on the biggest fan base? Let’s find out.

Hackers are a huge problem in any game, especially in FPS games like Call of Duty, Valorant, Overwatch, etc. They ruin the game for other players and make the overall gaming experience sour. Recently, reports have surfaced that hackers can now use an exploit to kick other players out of the lobby in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
A Call of Duty content creator, ItsHapa from X (formerly Twitter) released a video on February 1, showcasing how a Call of Duty cheater can make other players disconnect. The video shows the hacker using the exploit to the extent that the game triggered a forfeit timer from the opponents, ensuring that the cheater won without having to do anything. This rendered matches unplayable and allowed cheaters to take over instead of keeping the game competitive.

CharlieIntel on X, a reliable source of all Call of Duty-related news, posted a statement from Activision. They claimed and assured the players that this issue had been fixed and that the video by ItsHapa does not represent the current status of the game, however, players of the game remain doubtful.
The recent video showing a cheat-based kick is from the Black Ops 6 Multiplayer Beta and was addressed prior to the November BO6 launch. The team is always investigating claims of cheat-based kicks, but this video does not represent the current live game.
Although the exploit has been patched since the release of that video, this sort of exploit highlights how Activision lacks control over its own game. It’s not like this is the first time that players had to deal with game-breaking exploits in the Call of Duty series. This type of exploit was also found in other Call of Duty titles as well like Modern Warfare 3.

It’s been only days since the second season of Black Ops 6 was launched and hackers are still rampant in the game. Activision assured the players that they are actively monitoring and addressing cheaters and game-breaking cheats and will take care of them as soon as possible. However, players believe that Activision’s reactive approach to security is not enough to prevent issues like these.
The success of Activision’s Call of Duty series relies on fair competition, but numerous hacking scandals and cheaters degrade the integrity of the game. If Activision fails to take a more proactive approach to combat cheaters, they risk losing their long-dominating player base.
