Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the next mainline entry in Ubisoft’s long-running franchise and has been in development since 2020. Originally, the game was supposed to hit the shelves on November 15. However, it got delayed twice due to the massive community backlash.
As we get closer to Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ launch, the French publisher has been sharing various features and things we can expect to see in the game. While the studio has managed to nail down everything, it took quite a bit of effort when it came to managing Yasuke and Naoe.
In an interview with Gamer Rant, Assassin’s Creed Shadows creative director Jonathan Dumont opened up about the creative direction of the game and how the studio approached the Japan setting, which has been one of the longest-requested features.
When asked how Dumont managed to handle such a massive game in terms of development, he explained the level of difficulty the development team had to face. Revamping the game’s engine and pushing out completely different character archetypes took a lot of time for Ubisoft to figure out.
It was a tough game to build from that perspective because we’re revamping a lot of engine stuff. At the same time, we’re trying to push these concepts a little bit further as well. Having two different character archetypes that work two different ways, trying to have two sides to the stories, while not depicting history as too much of a historical fiction–still being true to the core of it.
If you’re unaware, Ubisoft is bringing unique narratives in Assassin’s Creed Shadows with two separate protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe. When we talk about Yasuke, he’s inspired by the historical African samurai and is supposed to be the “warrior” in the game. From the early looks, he seems like a character who’s centered around melee fights.
On the other hand, we have Naoe, the “ninja” of Shadows. Early gameplay footage suggests she’s an agile character and an expert in covert missions. With her speed and blitzing abilities, she is supposed to be the “stealth character,” allowing gamers to experience the franchise’s classic elements.
Putting together two characters who have completely different archetypes and background stories isn’t an easy task. There’s a reason why we don’t see many gaming studios experimenting with these ideas and instead choosing to stick with a single protagonist. Dual protagonists with different abilities are always tougher to manage, but Ubisoft believes it has pulled it off successfully.
Despite the fact that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is still weeks away from release, Ubisoft has been constantly pushing out new bits of information about the game and has now given some details for the the title’s first expansion, titled Claws of Awaji.
With this DLC, gamers will drop into a brand-new region called Awaji, where they’ll be pursued by a new faction called Sanzoku Ippa and will have to fend off “deadly new foes.” The expansion will also introduce Bō, a brand new weapon type for Naoe to master.
According to Ubisoft, Claws of Awaji will bring over 10 hours of new content into Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Gamers who pre-order any version of the game will get the first expansion for absolutely free upon its release. It will also be available for those who don’t.
It’s also been confirmed that the expansion is being developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux, the same studio that has us Assassin’s Creed Mirage. This will allow the developers to polish the main game even further before the main release.
