A past recall on Costco’s Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) just received a frightening update. The recall, which was initially issued last October, is now designated as Class I, the highest risk level assigned by the organization and one that means there’s a very serious risk of death.
The FDA website describes Class I as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
A total of 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in twin 12 oz. packages were recalled last year after laboratory testing confirmed Listeria monocytogenes on October 21, 2024.
Customers were asked to look out for Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon products purchased between October 9, 2024 and October 13, 2024 with the lot number 8512801270. Newsweek reports that the product was distributed in Florida, and sold at “select” stores in the southeastern U.S.
Although the recalled product is no longer on shelves, it’s possible that some customers may have frozen the smoked salmon for later use. It’s vital that customers check their freezers for the recalled product.
According to Acme Smoked Fish Corp, the producer of the smoked salmon, those who purchased the item can return it to Costco for a full refund.
With the unsettling rise in recalls over listeria concerns, customers should be aware of the symptoms of listeria infection, aka listeriosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of the illness include fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, confusion, and stiff neck. For those infected with an intestinal listeria illness, symptoms to watch out for include diarrhea and vomiting.
Per the CDC, you should contact a healthcare provider if you have both eaten food that has been recalled or linked to an outbreak and you have a fever and other symptoms of listeriosis.
“Let the healthcare provider know if you ate possibly contaminated food,” states the CDC. “This step is especially important if you are pregnant, are 65 years or older, or have a weakened immune system.”
