Apex Legends Gatekeeping Characters for New Players Is Likely Contributing to Its Struggling Player Base

Let’s be honest here, 2024 was the worst year in Apex Legends‘ lifespan so far. No one really enjoyed all the battle pass changes and shenanigans EA tried to pull off. Things got even worse when bugs, hackers, and over-monetization constantly plagued the game.

Due to all these problems, Apex Legends has been losing players rapidly. However, the hardcore fans are still sticking around and wondering where it all went wrong. Some players have finally found the biggest hurdle for the game right now.

With constant controversies surrounding Apex Legends in the last couple of months, gamers have been debating the state of the title on various social media problems. Players are looking for solutions to bring the title to where it once was.

One gamer has taken to the game’s official subreddit and claims that the reason why Apex Legends is failing right now is because EA is gatekeeping legends from newer players.

Unlocking legends in Apex Legends isn’t an easy process. Gamers can either use real money or grind for legend tokens to unlock new characters. The problem is that grinding legend tokens is a nightmare for newer players, as it takes hundreds of hours just to get enough currency for one character.

On the other hand, using real money puts a certain section of the community at a major advantage as they can easily unlock powerful heroes and dominate newer players. As various players agree, Apex Legend likes to gatekeep content and force players to make big commitments.

Let’s hope EA and Respawn listen to the community’s concerns and bring the necessary solutions to Apex Legends to fix this problem. Otherwise, it won’t be long before whatever is left of the player base moves to Marvel Rivals.

If you’ve forgotten already, back in March 2024, EA’s CEO stated that the studio is preparing to take Apex Legends to a brand-new level.

This was supposed to be the new phase for the battle royale, suggesting new modes and revealing how the developers were working to make these changes.

The CEO promised gamers that they’ll see these changes throughout the entirety of 2024. Unfortunately, that never ended up happening, as those promised changes and features never made it to the game.

Gamers are frustrated with the path Apex Legends has taken with monetization, as they feel EA is just interested in making profits and not improving the condition of the title. Others were sad to see that such major changes were dropped and never even shared with the community.

Will EA and Respawn Entertainment ever fulfill their promises? Well, no one knows at this point. However, considering the hype and success this IP has managed to achieve, it would be a mistake to let it all go down the drain just for the sake of making money.
